7 arrested, 5 wanted on Rockford heroin charges

ROCKFORD —

Every Sunday for the past several months, hundreds of people would flock to a back parking lot of a Rockford housing project to get a free hit of heroin — a token of appreciation from their supplier, law enforcement officials said.

Details of the weekly giveaways emerged as police announced the Tuesday morning arrests of key players in the large-scale heroin distribution business that sold hundreds of individual one-hit packets of the drug throughout the Rockford area every day and organized the Sunday freebies.

The arrests are the result of a joint investigation into the ring, allegedly headed by Sammy R. Gordon, 45, of Rockford, officials said. Others arrested were Robert Smith, 38; Paul Gipson, 26; Caprisha L. Sherman, 25; Mercedes Colon, 21; David Chapman, 46; and Richard Taylor, 23. Police are looking for five others. All live in Rockford. READ MORE CLICK HERE
