Three decades after hip-hop first cracked the Top 40, white MCs remain, first
and foremost, a joke: fodder for sketch-comedy routines, YouTube parodies and
reality TV. Eminem is the exception that proves the rule, and he had to create
an outsize tragicomic persona ù the trailer-trash bane of Middle America ù to
justify his existence. In a culture saturated by hip-hop, shouldn't anyone be
able to spit rhymes without shame, apology or having to crack jokes about his
Star Wars action-figure collection?

Enter Asher Roth, a gangly redhead from the Philadelphia suburbs. Roth's tight,
witty debut lives up to the Internet hype that has swirled around him for
months. In the thudding "Lark on My Go-Kart," Roth calls himself a "dork" and
says he has "hair like a troll doll." But he keeps the nerd-boy self-deprecation
to a minimum and acts, you know, like a rapper: boasting nimbly (and often
hilariously) about getting girls ("Lion's Roar") and getting high ("Blunt
Cruisin'") over chipper beats by newcomer Oren Yoel. Roth's timbre and cadence
will remind listeners of Eminem, a subject he addresses head-on in "As I Em."
But he is his own man ù a blithe braggart, untroubled by the need to keep it
real. And that white rapper's albatross? He dismisses it with a couplet: "My
friends said, 'Homey, you know that you're white, dude'/I said, 'What, for real?
It's all good.'"

A Harlem native, Dominican rapper J.R. Writer grew up listening to Big Pun, Big
L, and his all-time favorite, 2Pac. As a teen he worked the Harlem hip-hop
circuit hard, appearing on local access cable television shows and joining every
open-mike competition he could. It was at one of these battles that he met
Cam'ron and Juelz Santana, members of a crew known as the Diplomats or Dipset.
Cam'ron had just signed a deal with Roc-a-Fella, Santana was unsigned heat, and
the first Dipset mixtape was still in the works, so no matter how impressed
Cam'ron was with Writer's fast and furious style, he was unable to take on new
talent at that moment. Writer appreciated the praise but didn't believe Cam'ron
was serious when he promised to call back once Dipset was settled. It didn't
take long for Dipset to explode, and only a month later, Cam'ron made good on
his promise. Soon Writer was appearing on a new Dipset track, "Squalie," which
would eventually land on Santana's 2003 album From Me to U. He was now a member
of the Dipset family and appeared on the crew's numerous mixtapes. A year later,
he introduced his own Writer's Block series of mixtapes, landed some tracks on
the Diplomats collection Diplomatic Immunity, Vol. 2, and appeared as a guest on
Cam'ron's album Purple Haze. His aboveground full-length debut was supposed to
hit the streets in 2005, but it took until 2006 for the ambitious History in the
Making to land on the Koch label. After the fourth volume of Writer's Block, he
hooked up with Babygrande for the fifth volume of the series, as well as 2008's
Politics and Bullshit.

Memphis Tennessee artist and former Rap-A-Lot Records signee,
Criminal Manne, has announced plans to release his new album
ôGot Work?ö March 24th. Criminal Manne, founder of Gangsta
Records, teamed up with Atlanta based Nina K. Easton of IMG
International, known for her first label Ichiban Records, and
now labels 404 Music and IMG Records. The album is being
released by IMG Records and will be distributed in the United
States and Canada by Koch Distribution. ôGot Work?ö is
Criminals first studio release after leaving Rap-A-Lot records
in 2005 due to creative differences.

ôGot Work?ö comes with heavy production by long time friend
and business partner, DJ Squeeky of Mo Chedda Records.
Criminal takes center stage on this 18 track full length
compact disc that represents true Southern style. The album
features the original creators of that southern Memphis sound,
8 Ball & MJG, with a real banger ôRollinö. ôRollinö will also
be one of the double single releases scheduled for official
release next week.

Criminal says ôI have done a lot of records and mixtapes, but
I have never felt like I have had a team to work with me like
IMG, my new label. They have let me do an album that I am
excited about, this is the hardest record I have done. It
stays true to my roots, and I know my fans will like this
record, and with the machine at IMG I know I will be able to
reach new ones.ö

The lead single from the album ôGone Head Hateö was leaked to
urban radio late last year and captured the attention of local
listeners in Atlanta, Memphis, Alabama, & Mississippi. The
single was pulled from radio by management for undisclosed
reasons. Upon release of ôGot Work?ö management now talks a
remix featuring Lil Boosie, upon release of producer DJ
Squeeky from the hospital. In recent news, the DJ was driving
back from an Atlanta recording session, where he was in a
serious car accident. ôGot Work?ö follows the highly
publicized mixtapes ôNeighborhood Dopemanö hosted by DJ.
Drama, and newly released ôThe Takeoverö hosted by DJ Scream
in association with Frayser Boy.

State Sen. Dan Rutherford is trying to put the brakes on texting while driving in Illinois.

The Pontiac Republican said violators would pay $75 under his proposal, but they’d pay $200 if they cause an accident.

Rutherford said he got the idea for the legislation after he saw a driver who was texting while trying to steer with her elbows. He says he also noticed a child in the back seat of that vehicle.

Rutherford’s bill awaits consideration in the General Assembly.

Rockford loan officer sentenced

A 41-year-old Rockford man who was convicted in November of defrauding commercial lenders by helping shaky loan applicants receive mortgage-backed loans was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison Monday.

Mitchel A. Fuchs, also known as Mike Fox, was the final person sentenced in a three-person fraud ring that operated from at least 2002 through October 2005.

Local rapper Chris Lynell Jackson, known professionally as Nussie, was shot and killed Monday night in a house on America Street, relatives said at the crime scene.

Police spokesman Capt. Carl Kelley said that officers responding to a report of a shooting found a man shot and injured in the 2500 block of North Boulevard around 11:24 p.m.

That man told them that another man had been shot in a house nearby, Kelley said.

Officers responded and found a deceased man with a gunshot wound in a house at 2317 America St., between Evergreen Drive and Delphine Street.

Kelley declined to release the identity of the deceased, but Jackson's sister Ashley Richardson said her brother was the man inside the house.

Over 50 people crowded around the crime scene tape into the early morning hours. Detectives were waiting to have a search warrant drawn up and signed before they went back into the house, Kelley said.

Richardson said her brother had been rapping for at least four years and had garnered quite a following in Baton Rouge. He would also regularly play shows in Thibodaux, Plaquemine and White Castle, she said.

Nussie's last album, "The Champ is Here" came out last April on Dope Celebrity Records.

Boy, 16, becomes Rockford's first homicide victim of the year

ROCKFORD —

Andre Ausler, a 16-year-old Rockford boy, was killed early today in the city’s first homicide of the year.

Rockford police Deputy Chief Greg Lindmark said officers responded to a call of guns being fired at 1:25 a.m. at the Auburn Manor apartment complex in the 4000 block of Auburn Street.

Officers found the teen lying in a first-floor hallway. Ausler was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:40 a.m.

An autopsy performed this morning confirmed Ausler was killed by a gunshot wound. The coroner’s office would not say where the teen was shot or how many times.

Toxicology results will be available in two weeks. The Rockford Police Department is investigating the homicide.

“It appears this man and others were in the hallway of the apartment building when an argument ensued and shots were fired,” Lindmark said.

The teen is a Rockford resident, Lindmark said, but does not live in Auburn Manor.

No arrests have been made.

Lindmark said police are in the process of talking to individuals who were at the scene.

The teenager’s death comes just two days after Winnebago County sheriff’s police discovered the body of a 38-year-old man in a car in the Gem Suburban Trailer Park.

That man, Felix Rojas Perez, was killed from a gunshot wound to the head. He is the county’s first homicide victim of the year.

Police were called to the trailer park, 4650 S. Main St., at 9:25 a.m. Friday in reference to a deceased male in a vehicle. An autopsy conducted Saturday indicated that Perez was killed within 24 hours of when his body was discovered.

No arrests have been made.

Rockford man arrested made in Jan. 16 slaying

A 43-year-old Rockford man has been charged in the death of Felix Rojas Perez, who was found shot to death Jan. 16 in his vehicle in the Gem Suburban Trailer Park, 4650 S. Main St.

Juan Francisco Blanco was charged Friday with first-degree murder and concealing a homicidal death. Bond is set at $1 million on the murder charge and $750,000 on the assault charge.

Blanco and Perez, 38, are brothers-in-law. Blanco has been in the Winnebago County Jail on an unrelated assault charge.

Every Sunday for the past several months, hundreds of people would flock to a back parking lot of a Rockford housing project to get a free hit of heroin — a token of appreciation from their supplier, law enforcement officials said.

Details of the weekly giveaways emerged as police announced the Tuesday morning arrests of key players in the large-scale heroin distribution business that sold hundreds of individual one-hit packets of the drug throughout the Rockford area every day and organized the Sunday freebies.

The arrests are the result of a joint investigation into the ring, allegedly headed by Sammy R. Gordon, 45, of Rockford, officials said. Others arrested were Robert Smith, 38; Paul Gipson, 26; Caprisha L. Sherman, 25; Mercedes Colon, 21; David Chapman, 46; and Richard Taylor, 23. Police are looking for five others. Handguns and drugs were recovered this week in a drug raid in an Auburn Street apartment.

About 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the Rockford Police Department narcotics unit served a search warrant in the 4100 block of Auburn Street. Officers recovered three handguns, 225 packets of heroin weighing 119 grams and 77 grams of cocaine.

Sammy Ray Gordon Jr., 20; Alex M. Boose, 21; and Javin S. Mason, 17, were arrested on charges of possession with intent to deliver heroin, possession with intent to deliver cocaine and armed violence.

Gordon Jr. also was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

All are being held in the Winnebago County Jail, along with Gordon’s father, Sammy R. Gordon, 45, of Rockford. The elder Gordon was arrested by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department last week and is charged with organizing a large-scale heroin operation.
